When it is sizzling in Salt Lake City–temperatures of 100+ degrees forecast this week–higher ground is the place to be. With temperatures 10-15 degrees cooler in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, a mountain hike is a good respite from the heat. Right now wildflowers are abundant and as more bloom in the next several weeks, the colors will only intensify.
There are literal “bouquets” of white columbine on the west side of Lake Catherine along with brilliant blue penstemmon, purple asters, and more. A bushy tailed fox was spotted on the trail on the way down.

The hike to Maybird Lake has many lush green areas along the trail with ferns and flowers. More Indian Paintbrush will be opening and tiny alpine flowers can be found hidden in rocky areas in higher elevations. You may even see a marmot catching some sunshine on granite rocks around the lake.
