February's Extremes

We've had some wonderful ski days this month, from one extreme to the other. Alta's alpine environment has seen temperatures near 50 degrees this month with beautiful sunny days fit for mountain picnics. We would have a stretch of warm weather for several days and then a storm would roll in and freshen things up. Last weekend the weather changed and brought in another storm with a foot of new snow on Saturday and great powder skiing.  As the week got underway on Monday, the next storm system came in.  Every day since we've seen 24 hour accumulations of 8-14 inches. The temperatures have dropped significantly since the weekend and the snow is very light.

From what the National Weather Service is telling us, it looks like we could be getting some snow over the next seven days.  Meanwhile, the base at Alta is 134 inches and we could see another 10 inches in the next 24 hours.

Around Alta Lodge, it feels like we're "snowed in" with all the accumulations of snow around the Lodge.  The crew is busy staying on top of the shoveling. Most guests are tired when they come in but happy and look forward to the next day.

We have nearly two more months of skiing.  Wonder what March and April have in store for us?

Warm Days with Sunshine

Earlier this week we had our hopes up with a weather forecast that called for snow measured in feet! Emotions were elevated and then the storm headed south and so did our snow! This afternoon's report is for snow Friday and Friday night, freshening things up for the weekend. The week ahead shows lots of sunshine and if it's not snowing, we'll gladly take the blue sky!

With the nice weather comes sunglasses, hiking up Baldy and skiing the chutes, lunch outside on the mountain and lighter clothing.  In February, it's a temporary warming spell and we know winter conditions will retun. We won't call it spring skiing because it's too early.  That's the thing with mountain life, you're prepared for whatever weather comes your way, as most skiers know.

Groundhog Day

At Alta, we like it when Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow like he did today on Ground Hog Day.  Six more weeks of winter, or as Marcus says, six more months of winter at Alta (until the snow melts completely!) Phil wouldn't have been able to see his shadow today at Alta as it is snowing, but we're glad he saw it in PA. Yesterday the parking lot was dry as a bone but not today or tomorrow or the next several days, for that matter.

In January, Powder Tracks and Womens' Ski Camp participants shared lots of smiles on the snowy skis days.  Getting ready for the day after a hearty breakfast and hitting what seemed like bottomless powder, well, it's something people remember for the rest of the season and it brings them back for more.  That's what's so special about the skiing here and the camaraderie that Alta Lodge guests share.
