121-inch Base

What does it take to get to 121 inches? Almost 12 feet of snow since January 1! Starting January 20 through the 24, Alta received 69 inches--yes, that's in five days. It's been a fun month at Alta for powder lovers. Day after day of great skiing with a few sunny days in between. The word gets out and the reservation staff juggle calls from people across the country who are ready to hop on a plane and get in on the fun.  The highway crew and avalanche control teams have worked extra long hours in keeping Highway 210 open and safe. On Monday the road was closed when control work brought down six avalanches across the road. The road opened briefly from 1-3 pm for downhill traffic.  Things were back to normal this morning with the road opening at 8:30 am.

It's hard to believe but the sun shows signs of reappearing this weekend...we'll look for you on the slopes!

The Sun Shines Through

Last Friday the sun made an appearance and has continued to shine through today.  The temperatures have stayed in the 20s during the daytime, deterring any melt from the snow we have.  The base at Alta is 83 inches and everything is open on the mountain.  The Baldy Chutes have drawn skiers to take the hike up the ridge that is required to ski the chutes. It's nice enough to sit outside and enjoy lunch or just a take a soak in the sun.

This break in the storm cycle comes to an end this evening as the next one moves in.  Accumulations are modest compared to the previous cycles but it will freshen things up.

The first of our four Women's Ski Camps begins on Thursday. Sold out for awhile now, most of the participants are returning guests who enjoy the camp so much that they return each year to attend with friends they have made at the camps.  Although the February camp is full, we still have room in the two March camps. If you want to participate, we encourage you sign up soon as these will fill up as well.

And it Just Keeps Snowing At Alta

January has been quite a month so far.  We've seen storm after storm lined up and at the moment, it continues to snow.  Alta's web site shows the average snowfall in January is 95 inches. We've already surpassed 60 inches and it's only January 11!

As you can imagine, the mountain is getting filled in more and more with each storm and the skiing is fantastic. It's the kind of skiing experience where you truly ski, eat and sleep and then repeat.

The Daily Pow has some footage of recent storm skiing -- enjoy!
